Eminent Domain

The Day, which has a very inconvenient registration policy to view their website, reports that US Congressman Rob Simmons (R-2) is working to ensure that the U.S. Coast Guard Museum to be built in New London doesn't take private homes by eminent domain.

From The Day:

It was previously reported that the impetus to keep the Coast Guard museum off eminent domain land initially began with Rep. James Oberstar, D-Minn., who delayed the legislation — originally sponsored by Simmons — in June 2003 because it would have allowed the museum on residential property.

Later that summer, House members added language to the Coast Guard bill that would allow congressional oversight of the museum.

Last fall, Rep. Peter DeFazio, D-Ore., called for the bill to explicitly prohibit the museum on property seized by eminent domain, a measure the House rejected 221-199.

<link rel='related' href='http://www.theday.com/eng/web/news/re.aspx?re=78927694-C696-4FB1-9C4E-3823ABD05C20' title='Simmons v.
